Summary
At approximately 7:40 p.m., a resident entering the cloakroom discovered that her reflection was already standing at the washbin.
The resident had not yet crossed the threshold.
According to her account, the reflection wore the same clothes and appeared to be drying its hands. It stopped when it noticed her.
The resident withdrew into the corridor and requested assistance.
Observations
A member of hall staff accompanied the resident back to the cloakroom. By then, the mirror showed the room normally.
The resident agreed to stand before it while the staff member observed from the doorway. Her reflection followed her movements without any apparent delay.
When asked whether she recognized the earlier figure as herself, she replied that she did.
When asked whether she might previously have entered the room and forgotten, she replied that she had considerably better things to forget.
The mirror was subsequently examined for damage, recent enchantment, and unauthorized attachment to another reflective surface. Nothing conclusive was found.
Its purchase records have not yet been located.
Subsequent occurrence
At 8:14 p.m., the same staff member returned to place a temporary notice beside the mirror.
His reflection entered from the opposite side of the glass.
He remained still. The reflection continued toward the washbasin, turned on a tap, and began washing its hands.
The tap in the actual cloakroom did not move.
The staff member reports that the reflected water was dark. He could not determine whether this was due to the lighting.
He left without placing the notice.
Action taken
The mirror has been covered with an opaque cloth secured around its frame. The cloakroom remains closed pending further examination; visitors may use the facilities on the opposite side of the hall.
Staff have been instructed not to remove the covering alone.
Anyone who used the mirror earlier that evening is asked to report unusual behavior, including delayed movement, additional figures, or reflections continuing after the person concerned had turned away.
Residents are also asked not to attempt conservation through the glass. No explanation has been obtained, and assistance does not presently require volunteers.
Additional note
At closing, the attendant found the temporary notice lying beneath the cloakroom door.
He had left it on the reception desk.
The printed side was unchanged. On the reverse, in handwriting he did not recognize, someone had written:
Please leave a clean towel.
No towel has been provided.
